Love is In the Air...

Well it is the day before Valentines Day... Because of this, February is the month we associate with love and romance. For those of you not in a relationship you can still be thankful for all that you love.  My thoughts on this cold blustery day are thinking about how much I love spring and summer, also  how much I love my job... running a small soap business and a lavender farm.  I love planning and scheduling the upcoming NY Lavender Festival and watching it all come together.  I love coming up with new and exciting ideas for the year ahead.  And I love this time of year to regroup, refresh and rest up for the busy time ahead.
With the temperatures falling below zero, and wind chills 20-30 below, I am definetly loving the fact that I am home working on my computer today!
Happy February everyone.

Olfactory Farm, well rested and abloom with ideas
January is about organization!  Organizing thoughts, ideas, paperwork, emails, the house etc.  This is the month to set things in motion for the upcoming season.  A whole lot of planning goes into the farm, shop and the annual NY Lavender Festival. Last year we incorporated the new and  exciting event "A Taste of Provence" which will be even bigger and better this year!
Olfactory also participates in the New York Sterling Renaissance Festival for seven weekends in July and August.  You can find us in the Lavender Shoppe and stock up on all your herbal needs.  While the  plants in the field use this time to "sleep" we are wide awake with anticipation.  The dates for this years Festival are Saturday July 9th and Sunday July 10th.  The kick off celebration "A Taste of Provence" is Friday July 8th!  Check back often for exciting updates...

Update at Ol'Factory Farm

Farm Update!

Resiliency and Perseverance at Ol’Factory Farm

The word resilience keeps popping up in random conversations. It is the one word I have come to know and appreciate this year. As I read about the effects this past winter has had on farmers all across the United States, it is more and more apparent to me that passion, determination, drive and resilience are, and always have been, stereotypical of farmers. As I am still somewhat new to farming, thirteen years a lavender grower, I have come to realize that Mother Nature doesn’t play favorites. In fact She makes us all rise to the challenge, use our ingenuity and creativeness and she never lets us take the easy way out. Being a farmer is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for those who consider it a past time. It is a full time job that requires odd hours, including weekends, not always so nice working conditions, physical labor, and a deep understanding of the environment we live in.

The past winter has been extremely harsh on the lavender plants, many of the older plants had to be removed, some plants are showing signs of life but are struggling, we are leaving them in the field in hopes that next year should prove to be a better year for them.

On a more positive note, the English lavenders seemed to have done well, and so have some of our younger plants in the field. We have been busy, busy, busy, planting new rows of lavender and many new lavender plants are on order for continual summer and fall plantings. We are planting more of the hardier varities and some we've never tried before. We are excited to say that even with all of the extra work taking place on the farm, Phase I of the new Medicinal Herb Garden is also underway. The garden will consist of various herbs beneficial to our well being and of course MORE LAVENDER!!

Even though some of the lavender is still recuperating from this past winter you can be certain that a celebration of lavender is still very much alive on the farm!

I would like to thank everyone for their continued support as community involvement grows each year. We are proud to sponsor the NY Lavender Festival scheduled for July 12th & 13th this year and the Lavender 5k Fun Run/Walk taking place July 13th. (Proceeds benefit the Make A Wish Foundation)
We couldn’t be happier than to announce that our first wedding ceremony and reception is planned to take place on the farm as well.

Each time I read a blog or an article about a lavender farmer or any farmer for that matter; that has suffered loss this year, my heart goes out to them. I so can feel their pain, but most of all I respect and admire the resilience of each and every one of them.

Sincerely,

Sue Chmieleski

Artists Wanted!

Last year we featured "Painting in the Field" and invited local artists to come and paint our wonderful lavender fields during the festival.  We are extending that invitation once again and would like to see more participants. What better inspiration to paint when you place yourself in a lovely "sea" of lavender.  Please send an email to chmiel@olfactorysoaps.com if you are interested.  There is no fee, and you will receive free admittance to the festival, just set up your easel and go to work!

5th annual Lavender Festival at Olfactory Farm July 14th & 15th

We have been busy planning our 5th annual Lavender Festival here at Olfactory Farm.  We have some new and exciting artisan vendors this year and have also been working on the 3rd Lavender Fun Run/Walk.  A RC High School graduate will be receiving the $600.00 award we raised at last years run.  The committee is so proud to be able to incorporate such a great event into the festival.  If you are interested in participating the run takes place Sunday morning, July 15th.  You can email me for more information and an application. chmiel@olfactorysoaps.com
We also have some new musical entertainment lined up and some great guest speakers. Our chef, Kevin McMaster will be serving up some great lavender dishes again this year.  Dr. Les Moore, Director of Integrative Medicine at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic, has agreed to speak at our festival this year.  Dr. Moore is a Naturopathic Physician and author of Classical Formulas in the Western Herbal Tradition.
We will also be welcoming back Arleen Hodge, an herbalist from Henrietta NY.  Arleen has studied under Rosemary Gladstar and will be speaking on the many uses of lavender.

Stay tuned as I will be posting more information as we get closer.
Thanks,
Sue Chmieleski
